If you are feeling generally sad and low and find yourself constantly entertaining negative thoughts, then there is a possibility that you could be depressed.  Lots of people suffer from depression without knowing it.  Others are hesitant to seek help because they are afraid of looking ridiculous or they really could not just admit that there is something wrong with them.  After all, friends and family might think it strange for them to go to the doctor just because they are a bit blue.  Nevertheless, depression is a serious problem that can significantly affect your quality of life.

Unless you have experienced a recent major trauma, you might also be wondering “Why am I depressed?”  We often think that depression only happens to those who have lost a loved one, been laid off work, or are in the throes of financial difficulty.  Yet, there are other less well-known triggers for the condition.  Here are a few of them.

1.  Wrong diet.  There is a saying that “you are what you eat” and diet can have a significant effect on your mood.  If you are not getting enough of the omega-3 fatty acids found in certain fish and vegetable oil, you might be more prone to depression. The trick here is to know what kinds of food that you need to eat. Of course, you need to have a balanced diet to have a better and healthier mind.

2.  City living.  Higher levels of stress are associated with depression.  Living in the city and the additional stressors that come with it like a high-pressure job, a long commute, or fear of street crimes might be contributing to your low mood. If you think that, you need to move to a place where there is less stress and pressure, then that may be the right thing to do.

3.  Too much exposure to the internet.  Healthy human relationships keep you in a positive frame of mind. However, if you have been spending too much time online you may be giving up warm, genuine interactions in favour of mediated cyber-relationships.  This is better because when you talk to people, they can give you insights and advice far better than what you can get in the internet.

4.  Lack of sleep.  If you are not getting enough sleep, your body – including your brain cells – do not get the needed time to rest and renew themselves.  If the brain does not work at its optimum level, you may find yourself feeling depressed.  If you are not feeling refreshed when you wake up in the morning, you may not be getting all the sleep you need. So, always get your well-deserved sleep every day.
